Are you feeling in a rut with regard to your preaching? In a small church and can’t afford to take time off to go to a workshop? This workshop will help you freshen up your preaching by taking a look at the Preparation, the Presentation, and the Preaching of the sermon. We will consider lectionary vs. series planning, what kind of illustrations work and don’t work, exegeting both the Bible and the congregation, using visuals, manuscript vs. extemporaneous, as well as thinking about how the sermon fits into the worship service. We will also cover basic logistics such as where to stand. I have preached in town and country small church settings for 20 years and will use both positive and negative examples from my own videos. I will also give feedback on one of your own sermons.
You will receive 2.0 CEU credits for this course.
About the Instructor
Dr. Martha Myre is an ordained elder in the North Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church. She pastors the First United Methodist Church of Bowie, Texas. Her undergraduate education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University, a Master of Theological Studies from Perkins School of Theology from SMU and a PhD in Religious Studies (with a concentration in Hebrew Bible) from SMU. Martha is constantly reading and learning and loves to teach Bible Studies, Wesleyan studies, Evangelism, and other things to children, youth, and adults. She basically loves facilitating a life of learning and discipleship in others. A life-long interest has been to open the door between academics and the church, so that the two sides of her brain can work together. The most common comment that she hears after her sermons is: “I’ve never thought about it that way before!”
